Maytas may bring city's elevated road down

The crisis in Satyam Computers seems to have had a direct impact on the ongoing work on the elevated toll expressway that will connect Bangalore with Electronic City.
The Rs 775-crore project, being handled by the now-infamous Maytas Infra Pvt Ltd, is badly in need of a bailout. A portion of the under-construction stretch (about 40 feet) near the entrance of Electronic City is drooping at an alarming rate and on January 7, some of it fell. The site, which sees a regular rush of traffic every day, is a disaster waiting to happen. Maytas, which is developing the expressway along with Soma Enterprise and Nagarjuna constructions, believe there is no problem with the structure.
But a visit to the site reveals the drooping concrete has caused serious damage to the metal support holding the 40-feet structure together. If that wasn't enough, the employees have covered up the damaged stretch with plastic sheets and extra metal support without putting appropriate warning boards. "Not just motorists and pedestrians, even labourers working on the spot are at risk," a Maytas worked said. "A portion of the structure fell off on January 7, fortunately there was no one around," the worker added.
Ajay Kumar Mohanty, deputy project manager for Maytas, called it a one-off incident and said the company will fix the problem in the next few days. Asked about the caution boards, he said they would be placed immediately.
Parvatheesham, NHAI's project manager for the Hosure side, said they were not aware of the incident and have now asked Maytas to repair the damage done. However, he said he could not comment on whether the project would be delayed over the issue or not.
