'More Cauvery water will be pumped into City'
DH News Service, Bangalore:
The State government will spend Rs 3,000 crore during the next two-and-a-half years to ensure that 5 TMC feet of water can be pumped to the City from Cauvery river.

Bangalore would not experience any drinking water problem when this process is completed, said Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) Minister Katta Subramanya Naidu. This forms part of the Rs 6,000 crore that had been allotted by the government for improving drinking water, roads, and sewage in the City.

Speaking at a function organised to mark the inauguration of Cauvery water supply works and drainage facilities at Kakatheeya Nagar in Chikkalasandra, Naidu said, “Bangalore was presently utilising only 15 TMC feet out of the 20 TMC feet allotted to it from Cauvery river,” he said.

Tamil Nadu had prevented us from utilising the full quantity and this would be done in the next couple of years. A sum of Rs 1,000 crore will be utilised to bring Cauvery water to the newly added BBMP areas,” he added.

A sum of Rs 2,000 crore will be spent to improve the City’s sewerage system by setting up Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs). Tenders have been invited for the same and work will start shortly, the Minister said. “Efforts will be undertaken to improve all the 1,048 tanks in the City in phases,” the Minister said.

Leaking plastic water pipelines would be replaced by metal ones by the end of January 2009, he said. Yediyur has been declared a model ward and a sum of Rs 10 crore would be spent to improve roads and other infrastructure here, Naidu said.
