BANGALORE: Attention shop owners.

It is time to cross your t’s and dot your i’s... in Kannada.

And make sure the name and signboards outside your establishment are displayed prominently in Kannada.

For, come November, a penalty of Rs 10,000 awaits all who refuse to comply with this rule. Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority, Mukhyamantri Chandru, on Wednesday told reporters that the authority has decided to make display of Kannada language in signboards and name boards of all business establishments mandatory from November 1.

“Those failing to comply will be penalised with Rs 10,000.

If shop owners continue to ignore the authority’s decision, their licences will be cancelled,” Chandru said.

He said that deputy commissioners would be empowered to collect the fine.

When asked whether the decision would lead to resentment among shop-keepers, he said that the authority was only implementing a law enacted by the government.
