Rainwater harvest ing will soon become a must for all houses and commercial buildings coming up on sites measuring 30 x 40 sq. feet and above in the city.
“The government is all set to pass an Act on this shortly,” minister Katta Subramanya Naidu said speaking to reporters during his visit to Jayanagar to inspect BWSSB projects on Monday.
Rainwater harvesting will soon be adopted in Lalbagh and Cubbon park, he revealed, adding that a rainwater harvesting theme park will be constructed at a cost of Rs 32 lakh at 40th cross, 7th Main, 5th block Jayanagar.
The park will have an information centre and a rainwater harvesting model to create awareness about the system. The foundation stones for all the three projects will be laid in November by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.
The minister announced that 28 lakes in the city will be rejuvenated. The areas covered by the tanks would be measured and provision would be made in them for sewerage water treatment and rain water harvesting. The tank bunds will be strengthened. “We plan to convert them into tourist spots. The BWSSB will be allowed to make use of the tank water. The project report is ready and a tender has already been called. The work will be completed in a year’s time,” Mr Katta said.
All BWSSB assistant engineers have been ordered to be present in their respective areas of work in all the 147 wards between 8 am and 1 pm once a week to listen to public grievances. Orders would be passed on this shortly, he said.
He also said an investigation would be ordered into certain decisions taken by BWSSB, without the consultation of the government.
Inspecting the works in Jayanagar constituency, Mr Naidu said of the 192km water lines in the area, pipelines over 12 kms will be replaced with wider metallic pipes for now, and others will be replaced eventually.
