BANGALORE: Traffic was disrupted on Mysore Road as Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) activists on Sunday intensified their protest against the Chennai-based outfit which has filed an objection to according Classical Language status to Kannada under the Constitution.
KRV activists stopped all buses plying either to or from Tamil Nadu at the satellite bus stand on Mysore Road and demanded that the Centre announce immediately its decision of conferring this status to Kannada.
KRV activists demanded that the Tamil Nadu government persuade the Tamil activists who filed the petition against Kannada to desist. “Now it is up to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister to ensure that there is a cordial relationship between Tamilians and Kannadigas,” said KRV state president Narayana Gowda.
The protesters threatened a dharna in front of all central government offices in the state on Monday if the centre fails to intervene.
“The centre should not only confer the Classical Language status to Kannada, it should also restrain Tamil Nadu from going ahead with the Hogenakkal drinking water project till Karnataka’s doubts about the project are cleared,” they said.
The protest disrupted bus services to Tamil Nadu and caused a traffic pile-up on the busy Mysore Road till afternoon.
