BANGALORE: The disposal of solid waste at unauthorised sites is expected to see an end with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) initiating efforts to track the trucks involved in illegal dumping of waste.

According to senior BBMP officials: "Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force is conducting an enquiry and has asked the garbage contractors to produce the vehicles. The GPRS systems were installed in these vehicles to bring in transparency in the entire disposal system. But,we have realised that the contractors have been illegally dumping the garbage at unauthorised sites and storm water drains.

GPRS is expected to set right the problems related to the dumping of garbage. It is due to these contractors who are dumping garbage that the villagers are protesting, said the official.

Speaking to this website's newspaper, BMTF officials said that the issue regarding unauthorised garbage dumping has been reported and contractors have been asked to produce their vehicles.

VILLAGERS PROTEST

However, The disposal of solid waste seems to be a problem for the villagers residing in the vicinity of Terra Firma, garbage processing unit in Dodaballapur. On Monday the villagers protested against the functioning of the unit as they fear the spread of epidemics.

Villagers from Gundalahalli, Sakkare Gollahalli and Bhaktarahalli have expressed their unhappiness with the disposal as they are also apprehensive of potential health hazards. They said that more than 250- 300 truckloads of garbage were dumped at this unit everyday."We request the Palike and the Pollution Control Board to take action and stop the functioning of unit. About 3,000 tonnes of garbage is dumped at this unit.We have also submitted a memorandum to the tahsildar but that was of no help, said Gangamurthy, of Gundlahalli. We will continue the protest if BBMP fails to take action and closes the unit," said R Chandra Tejashwi, committee convenor.
