The anemometers measuring wind speed across Bengaluru are running fast these days.

While the city is yet to come under the grip of ‘revised’ monsoon conditions, the high speed winds have already started blowing. The city’s annual average wind speed hovers between 8 kmph and 15.

However, in the last one week alone, the wind speed has gone up to 42 kmph.

On June 24 and June 26, the Indian meteorological department has recorded the maximum wind speed at 42 kmph.

The meteorologists attribute it to the active monsoon conditions over parts of south interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru.

The geographical location of the city, which is about 900 metres above the Mean sea level, is another reason for the high speed, humid winds.

“During the South West Monsoon, the wind moves from Arabian sea towards the eastern coast. The high pressure area over the west coast increases the speed of the wind which is travelling towards the lower pressure area — the Eastern Ghats. A pressure gradient will be created, increasing the wind speed,’’ said a senior meteorologist.

The wind speed, however, is expected to go even higher with monsoon being under ‘revise’ mode.

“For the past few days, the monsoon had become weaker in the state and in other parts of the country.

Since monsoon is being revised, many parts of the city will soon receive good amount of rainfall,” the meteorologist added.

The IMD has issued warning that the surface winds over Bengaluru will be stronger and gusty.

Meanwhile, the Bruhad Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) forest cell has asked citizens to be aware of soft wood and dead trees during the high wind speed conditions.

The BBMP has issued the alert after seven trees were reduced to stumps in several places in the city since the winds picked up speed.
