Weekend partying and shopping plans of Bangaloreans went awry. Power and water supply got disrupted, houses in low-lying areas were flooded, traffic jams choked the streets, and trees got uprooted in the heavy downpour and gusty winds that lashed the City on Saturday evening.
More trouble is in the offing as the Meteorological Department has predicted thundershowers on Sunday.
The rain, which started pounding the City around 3.30 pm, lasted till 9 pm. Several areas plunged into darkness for more than five hours as power supply was disrupted. HAL, Koramangala, Indiranagar, Shivajinagar, Austin town, Residency Road, MG Road, Richmond Road, and surrounding places were among the worst affected.
Two electricity poles were damaged in Sanjaynagar and one each at Sahakaranagar and Vidyaranyapuram. Five poles were also damaged on Cunningham Road.
Power disruption
The reason for power supply disruption was a technical snag in the 66 kVA transmission line between HAL and Hoodi at Kadubisanahalli.
The BESCOM workers started work immediately and restored power by shifting the load, but the problem got complicated by around 6 pm. Power was finally restored by 8 pm in most of the areas.
The IVRS complaint section of BWSSB was receiving complaints round the clock pertaining to water supply, leakage of water and overflowing of manholes. The BWSSB has also opened four control rooms to work 24 hours to tackle the crisis.
Nearly 30 trees were uprooted in the City and two cars totally damaged due to tree fall. However, no loss of life or injuries was reported. The City received 63.8 mm rainfall while the Airport recorded 6.2 mm and Yelahanka recorded 4.0 mm rainfall.
