IT-BT honchos hit the streets

IT-BT honchos hit the streets
DH News Service, Bangalore:
Captains of the IT and BT industry staged a protest at the HAL Airport here on Saturday, demanding its retention after the Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) starts its commercial flight operations on May 23.

Biocon Chairman and Managing Director Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Infosys HR, Head Mohandas Pai, commuters and airport employees participated in the protest.

The demonstrators demanded that the airport be retained and urged the authorities to re-negotiate with the BIAL consortium.

Citing capacity and connectivity constraints, monopolisation of Bangalore commercial airspace and loss of investment to the industry, they reiterated the need to have two airports in the City.

“We are not against the opening of the BIA, we need two airports and the government should negotiate with the BIAL for the sake of a better Bangalore,” said Kiran Mazumdar Shaw.
Gridlock
Expressing similar views, Pai said that having just one airport will lead to a gridlock across Bangalore and would affect short distance air travel in a big way.

“For a half-an-hour trip by air to Hubli, Mangalore or Chennai, one would have to travel three hours to board a flight at the BIA,” he said.

Kate Blfrink, a native of the Netherlands, who has been residing in Bangalore for the past two years said there was no logic for a booming city like Bangalore to have just one airport.

“In the Netherlands, there are two airports located one each at Amsterdam and Rotterdam which is just 55 km apart. Similarly, in a small country like France there are around 40 to 50 airports. Hence there is no reason why Bangalore should not have two airports,” he said.IT-BT honchos hit the streets
