BANGALORE: It was the last day of operations at the HAL, but acting airport director BR Sena says: “We will keep the services running till the last passenger leaves the airport.”

And after that last passenger has left, all the gates to the airport will be closed, its main assets like x-ray machines and trolleys will be locked up and it will once again function as a defence airport.

With most of the staff already moved to the BIA, the remaining few will be moved soon. Communications, navigation and surveillance will continue to be on standby for a month.

Today also marked the closure of contracts of the 30-odd companies running various services at the airport, which caused some tension.

Members of the KSTDC Prepaid Drivers Welfare Assn went on a protest. “700 drivers are employed here, where will they go and what will happen to their families?” association chief H Venkatesh Reddy said.
