BBMP is butcher of Citys greenery

BBMP is butcher of Citys greenery
DH News Service,Bangalore:

Justice M F Saldanha, former High Court judge and Chairman of Transparency International India (TII), has asked the BBMP officials to stop felling trees under the pretext of development and thereby destroying the city’s green cover.
In an open letter to the BBMP Commissioner S Subramanya, Justice Saldanha has said if the Palike did not stop doing so, TII members “would think of firmer methods to ensure that the city’s greenery is not further destroyed.”
Describing the Palike as the “butcher of Bangalore’s greenery”, he pointed out that more than 19,000 trees had been cut in the last eight years and “it has not even made one per cent difference to the city’s traffic.”
The Palike had succeeded in reducing the city’s green cover from over 15 per cent to 8 per cent, he asserted in the letter.
There was zero justification for the recent felling of over 100 most beautiful trees in the High Ground police station limits - along the Windsor Manor stretch, which never experienced traffic congestion.
