BBMP began construction of the underpass at Anand Nagar junction on Sunday morning. As a measure to ease traffic movement towards international airport the Palike has taken up construction of the underpass along with the underpass at BDA junction, which is yet to be completed.
The Palike is aiming at completing the construction within 48 hours. However, the past experience with construction of the underpass at BDA junction has forced the Palike officers not to assure the public that the work would be completed in 48 hours.
According to sources the Palike is under pressure to complete the underpass works at the earliest. The State government has directed the Palike to construct as many underpasses as possible before the inauguration of international airport.
BBMP Commissioner Dr S Subramanya said, “I will not assure the public we will finish the work within any deadline.”
As many as 52 elements measuring 3 mtr height, 3mtr breadth and 1 mtr thick will be placed. “Light motor vehicles will be allowed in the underpass. Pedestrians cross will also be provided at the underpass”, the commissioner said. He said, the work would not fetch more than Rs One crore. 52 elements cost about Rs 62 lakh, while the remaining works would demand hardly Rs 40 lakh.
Ground digging works started after restricting vehicles on single lane of Bellary Road. Ground for placing 26 elements was prepared by the evening. Vehicles would be allowed on service while pre-cast elements are placed.
A senior engineer said placing elements would be completed by Monday morning. Both up and down ramps would be done within a day.
Soon after the completion of the work here the Palike will take up works to complete widening of the stretch of Bellary Road between CBI junction and Hebbal flyover and construction of underpasses at CBI junction, Windsor Manor junction, an engineer said.

AT BDA JUNCTION

As many as 30 elements have been placed at BDA junction and construction of ramp on either side of the road has begun.
BBMP Chief Engineer (Major Roads) K S Krishna Reddy said that the construction work is going on a faster pace. As per the Palike time-table the works would be completed by first week of April. The vehicles moving from Windsor Manor bridge to International Airport will take on the up-ramp at the windsor manor bridge and travel on pre-cast elements.
