BANGALORE: Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's (BBMP) claim that it can make underpasses in 72 hours has fallen flat. As if that is not testimony enough to Palike's ineptness, BBMP has not been able to open the underpass near Cauvery junction even after 30 days.

One thousand per cent delay! Nothing unusual for the Palike that is known to have awarded work contracts at 50-100 per cent premium. Chief Engineer Krishna Reddy told this paper that asphalting of the approach roads was yet to be done. The work first suffered due to unexpected hindrances like water lines and rocks, he said.

Amidst much hype, the Palike promised the high-power committee on infrastructure that it planned to create a signal-free corridor from the city to the International Airport by taking up seven such 'instant' underpasses.

The first one near Cauvery theatre proved its ineptitude. Going by the precedent, BBMP may well take seven months to complete the underpasses, while the International Airport is being thrown open on March 28.

Krishna Reddy said that the work would be completed by Monday, but he was not sure about the formal inauguration.
