BANGALORE: Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has finally decided to build ‘instant’ underpasses on Bellary Road and complete three of them by the month-end.

The underpasses, which the palike claimed to complete in 72 hours, use ‘segment element technology’ and are expected to create a signal-free corridor to the new international airport. However, not all of them can be built in 72 hours.

Palike commissioner S Subramanya told reporters on Tuesday that construction on three such underpasses would commence from Wednesday at Cauvery junction, BDA junction and Windsor Manor junction.

Cauvery Junction:

Construction starts on Wednesday and ends on Saturday. An underpass would be created underground near Microsoft Research Centre at Lower Palace Orchards.

After the structure is complete, traffic from Bashyam Circle to BDA junction and to Mekhri Circle can move through the underground box while the traffic from BDA junction to Malleswaram can take left turn at Cauvery junction and proceed straight.

But the traffic from BDA junction to Mekhri Circle cannot go straight to Cauvery junction. It must take a left turn and then a U-turn on the box near Microsoft and join Bellary Road at Cauvery junction. Cost : Rs 1.50 crore.

BDA Junction Construction starts from Jan 19 and ends on Jan 28. A segmental arch would be built at the junction to take two-way traffic on Bellary Road over the arch.

Service roads on either side of Bellary Road would serve traffic on Palace Cross Road and Guttahalli Road, which can move under the arch. Cost of work: Rs 2.50 crore.

Windsor Manor Junction: Construction commences on Jan 28 and ends on Jan 31. The underpass here consists of three underground box structures opposite Prestige Abshot.

This is expected to facilitate free left turn at the junction for traffic coming from High Grounds end. Two boxes would be used for High Grounds-BDA junction traffic while traffic from BDA junction can go towards Kumara Krupa by passing through another box after taking a U-turn. Cost of work Rs 2.25 crore.

Special commissioner K R Srinivas, chief engineer Krishna Reddy were present.
