New dump for City waste soon

A solution to the serious problem of inadequate dump yards to dispose of municipal waste is in sight. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike will soon sign an agreement with a company called Terra Firma Bio-technologies, which is setting up a landfill and composting unit on a 200-acre stretch near Doddaballapur, to dispose of 1,000 tonnes of garbage everyday.

The Palike will have a three-year agreement with Terra Firma initially.

BBMP commissioner S Subramanya said once the unit begins functioning, municipal waste generated in west and Dasarahalli zones will be diverted to the unit.

On an average, Bangalore generates 3,000 tonnes of waste a day, of which only about 1,000 tonnes are disposed of in the designated places; what is left is dumped in abandoned quarries on the outskirts.
Terra Firma already has a composting unit at Bannerghatta which takes 200 tonnes of waste everyday.
Nanjundappa, general manager of Terra Firma, said the company had acquired 100 acres for developing the unit. Another 100 acres will be added soon.

The company will undertake composting and vermi-composting at the unit. Non bio-degradable waste will go to the landfill, which will be ready by January 2008.

It will be sufficent for the next 15 to 20 years, he said.
