Property worth lakhs of rupees was destroyed in a tent house fire opposite Yediyur lake in Jayanagar on Monday. Firemen fought for over four hours to put out the blaze. The reason for the mishap is not known.
According to Fire department officials, the tent house caught fire around 12.45 pm. 10 fire-tenders were rushed to the spot, but their arrival was delayed due to traffic jam. Firemen drew water from Yediyur lake to put off the fire, officials said.
The fire destroyed clothes and wooden materials in the tent house, besides damaging window panes and household goods in two of the adjacent apartments. Residents immediately shifted their gas cylinders outside, as a precautionary measure.
Two cars parked nearby were charred beyond recognition. The incident occurred due to negligence of tent house owner, said C Chandrashekhar, IG and Additional Director, Karnataka Fire and Emergency Services.
G V Saraswathamma, retired special DC, Mujrai Department, said that the Anjaneya Seva Samithi and tent house owner Rajeev Mehta had taken illegal possession of the land. The land belongs to the Mujrai Department, but the Samithi took possession of it illegally and rented it out to Mehta, she added.
It is learnt the land is reserved for civic amenities, but the Samithi has built a temple there.
