Chaos reigns supreme in City

Heavy downpour that lashed the city on Wednesday resulted in utter chaos at KR Market area, on Thursday.

During rain many were left stranded, vehicles almost got submerged and roads got logged, as some parts of the city received incessant rains. The wrath of Rain God didn’t affect low-lying areas alone.

Vegetables washed away in the rains resulted in piles of garbage in the market area. By-lanes were hardly inviting with the filth scattered all over. Buyers were struggling to find enough space to move around and the vehicular movement was also affected.

Many narrow roads in the City Market area looked shabby due to the dirt. But the activity was abuzz with large number of people flocking to buy flowers, attar (perfume), fruits and other items for the Gowri- Ganesha festival.
Ananya, a vegetable seller said, “Most of the people are buying things for the festival during the day time, to avoid getting caught in the rain, in the evening. Even I am worried about my stock getting spoilt in the rain. Thus am preparing to wind up my business early”.

Flushing out water
The residents of Ejipura had to suffer due to heavy rain on Thursday night. An anxious G S Karkada called Deccan Herald office to inform that most of the houses in 13th Cross at Ejipura Residents Association Road were flooded due to rainfall, which hit this part of the city, from 8 pm and went on till late in the night.

“Sewage water entered our home through the toilet and kitchen vents. The intensity of the downpour caused filthy water to gush into our residential premises,” said Mr Karkada.

This is the usual situation at Ejipura, whenever it rains heavily, as it is a low-lying area. “The BBMP officials are aware of this situation. A number of complaints made by the residents of this area have fallen on deaf ears. People are compelled to spend the entire night flushing out water out of their houses. Nothing has been done to get us out of this nightmarish situation,” rued Mr Karkada.

Flooded
Similarly, Anil Kumar, secretary of Forward Sixty Eight Residents Welfare Association called to inform that Ashwini Layout of Ejipura was completely flooded.

“Vehicles and pedestrians are unable to enter either Ashwini Layout or exit from here. In addition, storm water entered the sump of drinking water and has made it unfit for drinking purpose,” he said.

Due to heavy downpour on Wednesday night many areas in the city were flooded. BBMP Commissioner Dr S Subramanya visited rain-hit places on Thursday morning.

Later, speaking to press persons, he said due to an under capacity drain in Nayandahalli Mysore Road was flooded, affecting vehicular movement for more than a hour. Similarly, the road in front of PES college was flooded due to an on-going work of an under pass. As many as nine houses were flooded in Puttenahalli. Several houses in Iliyas Nagar, Kariyappa layout, Bhadrappa layout, Kamakshi Nagar, Sarakki, Bamboo Bazaar, Kumara Park West, Nayandahalli, Kadirenahalli and other areas too faced similar situations.

City records 9.4mm rainfall
Bangalore,DHNS: Met Department officials said that the heavy rain was the result of low pressure in the atmosphere, which had developed over interior and south-interior Karnataka.

The City recorded 9.4 mm rainfall while Bangalore airport recorded 44 mm rainfall on Thursday. Officials also said that heavy downpour was expected in the next couple of days.Traffic disrupted Heavy rain which started at around 8.30 pm continued to pour till late in the night, flooding thw roads, which in turn disrupted the traffic in several busy roads.

There were frequent traffic jams on MG Road, Residency Road, Airport Road, Hosur Road, Banneraghatta Road, Mekhri Circle, Old Madras Road, Majestic and Shivajinagar areas, as vehicles moved at snail’s pace.

Public who had gone shopping for the Ganesha festival were caught off-guard as rain played a spoil sport.
Deccan Herald received calls from residents of Ejipura and Domlur layout complaining that the rain water had entered their houses.

Power was also disrupted for a brief period, as a part of a huge tree in Jayanagar 3rd Block had collapsed and fallen on a electric pole.
