BMTC to build 44 Traffic Transit Management Centres

BANGALORE: If you are wary of riding your two-wheeler or driving your car all the way from home to your workplace on congested city roads, here is a reprieve. The day is not far when you can safely park your vehicle at a place near your residence and take a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus to your workplace and back.

For this, the corporation has planned to construct Traffic Transit Management Centres (TTMC) at 44 locations across the length and breadth of the city as well as the suburbs.

While work on one such centre is already under way in Jayanagar, the BMTC is awaiting the Centre’s nod for funding under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for eight more centres at Yeshwantapur, Domlur, Kengeri, Bannerghatta, Kadugudi, Whitefield, Vijayanagara and Banashankari, of which detailed project reports have been sent to the Ministry of Urban Development.

According to BMTC Managing Director Upendra Tripathy, sanction is likely to be accorded this week. Under JNNURM, the Union Government will fund 35 per cent of the project while the State Government will fund 15 per cent and the rest will be funded by BMTC’s own sources. The construction work is expected to be completed within a year.

Mr. Tripathy told The Hindu that the centres are strategically planned to address the “last-mile” connectivity problem for the residents of the city. He said TTMCs would be all-in-one centres where facilities like bus st ation, shopping, medical assistance, entertainment, food courts and ATMs would be made available. Each centre would cost approximately Rs. 25 crore, he added.
