Two social workers, who proved what citizen policing could achieve, were honoured by Bangalore City Police Commissioner N Achutha Rao on Monday at the Frazer Town police station here for their commendable service.
The duo, senior citizen Chandrasekhar and Alex Rodrigues, was instrumental in cracking a deadly gang which was involved in a series of thefts in Bangalore East division. The duo assisted the Frazer Town police in arresting all the seven members of the gang and recovering Rs 38 lakh worth stolen electrical and electronic equipment from them.
The booty recovered included 49 ultramodern sewing machines, 25 motor pump sets and aluminum and brass vessels, besides two four-wheelers used by the gang.
A proud Chandrasekhar admitted that his life was dedicated to social causes. Associated with the Frazer town police station for nearly two decades, he has chipped in with his mite in helping the police solve several complicated cases.
“I wanted to be a police officer but at this age I can only fullfill my dreams by moving with them and doing my bit,” the 60-year-old landowner said.
Men on mission
Chandrasekhar told Deccan Herald: “We were roped in to keep a tab on Fairoz, a notorious criminal. After a thorough look at his photograph and some details about his favourite haunts, we set out on the mission. We landed at Saraye Palya near Kaval Byrasandra and waited patiently for nearly two days before spotting and befriending Fairoz. One fine morning while he was busy in a marathon conversation in a phone booth, we alerted the police and managed to bundle him into our Scorpio and take him to the police station.”
When asked whether they were not scared of the consequences, 38-year-old Alex, an automobile spare-parts dealer and Chandrasekhar said in one voice: “We are ready to face it. Our aim is to make sure that our area is crime free zone, whatever it takes.”
The arrested are Babujan, Rabbi, Javeed, Sadiq Pasha, Mohammed Rafiq, Mubarak and Fairoz. During the day, the gang surveyed areas with garment factories and other industrial sheds and break into the premises in the night. They used gas cutters to remove grills, enter the factory through rear door, and decamp with the property.
The stolen property was moved to neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Kerala for disposal.
