Bangalore: Why is ‘mungaru male’ (monsoon) just confined to theatres? While the ‘monsoon movie’ is running to packed theatres, the real monsoon is eluding Bangalore.
Though the monsoon officially arrived in Karnataka on May 29, Bangaloreans are yet to get a feel of it. Monday began deceptively — with dark clouds in the afternoon bringing in the hope that there will be heavy rainfall. But there was only a drizzle.
The forecast is not cheerful either: For the next few days, Bangalore will see occasional drizzle and cold weather.
But July onwards, it will be a fullyblown monsoon.
While Bangaloreans are puzzled over the delayed monsoon, weather experts term it as a normal phenomenon during June. “There is nothing unusual about the present atmospheric conditions. Heavy winds, cooler temperature and drizzles are part of south west monsoon. And it is this monsoon which contributes the highest quantum of rainfall to the annual rainfall of south interior parts of Karnataka, including Bangalore,’’ said M B Rajegowda of the department of agro-meteorology, GKVK.
“June normally receives lesser rainfall (50 mm) compared to July and August. This year, the onset of monsoon itself was weak. Heavy showers during the tail-end of pre-monsoon period developed a situation which affected the strong onset of monsoon in and around Bangalore,’’ he said. According to Rajegowda, the clouds passing over Bangalore are coming from Arabian Ocean crossing the Western Ghats. Most of these clouds precipitate over the Western Ghats, and move towards Bangalore with minimal amount of moisture. “When temperature in July picks up, it will create a low-pressure zone attracting clouds from Western Ghat area,’’ he added. “When there is less rain in June, the following months will receive heavy rainfall,’’ Rajegowda said. But here is a small warning: as the delayed rain is expected to increase the intensity of rainfall in the coming months, it may bring in some misery too like flooded roads and swelling drains.
