Residents cry over official's shoulders

Residents cry over official's shoulders
Bangalore, DHNS:
As per regulations, slum colonies have to be rehabilitated to the closest available land near the colony without causing much hardship to their daily livelihood.

Residents of Swimming Pool Extension in Malleswaram on Friday voiced their opposition to the BBMP slum rehabilitation project to Special Commissioner Gaurav Gupta who visited the area.

Deccan Herald had reported the protest by residents opposing the BBMP plan to rehabilitate slum-dwellers residing opposite to the Malleswaram Vegetable Market on Sampige Road at the land housing BBMP ward office 5.

Chandrashekhar, a resident, said the BBMP official heard their grievances. “We have petitioned BBMP Commissioner Jairaj and submitted a memorandum containing 800 signatures expressing displeasure over the project.”

The project entails construction of 60 houses for 42 families at a cost of Rs 10.85 crore. Mr Gupta said, “We have received representations from both residents as well as slum-dwellers. The ward office land belongs to BBMP.

The area was not earmarked for a park. As per regulations, slum colonies have to be rehabilitated to the closest available land near the colony without causing much hardship to their daily livelihood. BBMP will rehabilitate people from slums in decent housing facilities.

Slum-dwellers are not outcastes. We will arrive at a decision after examining all sides of the issue.”
