BANGALORE: The War Memorial at Minsk Square will have to be relocated because it comes in the way of Namma Metro.

The Memorial reminds us of the sacrifices our heroes made for the sake of the nation. It has been a symbol of inspiration and is redolent with deep sentiments. It has all-through been a feather in the Garden City’s cap. When this website's newspaper contacted some war veterans, they expressed a tinge of sadness at the relocation plan.

“Our sentiments are attached with the Memorial. How can you relocate the sentiments? If the Memorial is shifted, it will lose much of its charm and reduce the value of the martyrs’ sacrifices. You cannot find a place as good as where it stands today. Now it is located in the heart of the City,” said Admiral O S Dawson, a World War veteran. This memorial inspires young people to join the defence forces because it symbolises bravery.

“My 16-year-old son wants to join the Air Force as he was inspired by the Ajeet Aircraft exhibited at the Memorial,” said Govindan, a school teacher.

Major General M C Nanjappa had a different opinion,”War memorial is a symbol of respect for those who sacrificed their lives for the good of the nation. The metro is also for the good of the nation.

If we maintain the dignity and respect of the Memorial, relocation is ok,” he says. Some morning joggers who frequent the spot do not appear happy with the idea.

“War Memorial lends the City a special charm and therefore, it ought to stay where it is now,” said an octogenarian morning walker David of Shivajinagar.

Why not merge some elements of the memorial into the walls of the Metro Station? See Singapore Metro stations have honoured Indian art of Kolam or Rangoli designs into their station at Little India. Every passing person will be reminded of the heroes who gave their present to the nation. The station can be named as Memorial Junction.
