ROHITH B R BANGALORE : Parking slot, bus stop, view point and what not! Bangalores flyovers it seems have been turned into all-in-one service junctions leading to traffic jams and accidents and defeating the very purpose behind their construction.
Buses, be it government or private, coming from K R Market Circle stop on the Sirsi Circle flyover to take hundreds of passengers who have made it their regular bus stop junction. A large part of these people are vegetable sellers and other vendors who are invariably laden with heavy luggage. L Shanti is one of them. Narrating her case she observed "We get more private vans and buses on flyover. It is easy to get home." The bus stand opposite Victowith heavy luggage in tow and has therefore resorted to the new route, she said.
P Samuel, employee working with an advertising company, that traffic jams are a common feature due to such bus stops on the flyover and during night hours, the same gives cause for accidents too.
On Hebbal flyover, the story is slightly different. The ban on bicycles, push carts and bullock carts does not find any takers here.
M D Raghavendra, an auditor said that normally bikers and car drivers will be in full speed on the flyover and chances of collision are proof traffic violation on flyovers is that they have become view points in some areas causing irritation to motorists. Flyover near Anand Rao Circle is a good example. Vehicle riders as well as other public stop here to have a look at the sprawling and verdant Race Course. Similarly, the flyover in K R Puram has more or less become a tourist attraction.
This hanging bridge has become a sunset paradise for lovers and families. K Nagaraj, a shop owner in the area said that cars are haphazardly parked in this stretch curbing the smooth movement of overs is the other common traffic violations across all the flyovers in the City.
Even the traffic police seem to be slack in acting against these violations. Rangaswamy, a traffic inspector in K R Market area agreed that he is aware of these violations taking place right beore him everyday. "We fine them, but the fine for such violations is minimal (Rs 100) and offenders are not deterred. We find at least eight to 10 such cases per week," he said.
