Officials told to strictly monitor the work
# Government to give 500 acres of land to BBMP to set up scientific landfills
# Work on setting up dumping yards in all four zones to start soon
BANGALORE: In the wake of unprecedented stray dog menace, especially in areas that have been recently added to the erstwhile BMP, the civic body will soon extend its mechanised garbage clearance system to the new areas, Health and Family Welfare Minister R Ashok said here on Saturday.
He was speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a function organised to launch the BBMP's new sanitation project.
Though the idea was to start the new mechanised system in all the areas simultaneously it could not be done because the term of the existing contractors in the erstwhile CMCs would end after February 2008, he said. Admitting that an effective garbage clearance and disposal system had to be put in place in the new areas, Mr. Ashok said that he had directed the officials to start the process of inviting tenders.
Responding to queries, the Minister said the State Government would soon provide more than 500 acres of land to BBMP to set up more scientific landfills for disposing of the city's waste.
"The BBMP is discussing the issue with the KIADB and the Industries Department and the land will be identified soon. Work on setting up dumping yards in all the four zones will start soon," he said.
The Minister, who earlier launched the new system, warned the officials of strict action if they did not effectively monitor cleaning activities in their jurisdiction.
BBMP Commissioner K. Jairaj said under the new contracts, citizens would see the main and arterial roads being cleaned with the help of machines.
