Republic Day flower show begins today

Bangalore: The week-long Republic Day flower show will begin on Friday at Lalbagh. It has been jointly organised by the Department of Horticulture and Mysore Horticultural Society.

G.K. Vasanth Kumar, Director of Lalbagh, told presspersons here on Thursday that this would be the seventh flower show after renovation of the Glass House in Lalbagh. Dilip Rau, Administrator of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, would inaugurate the show. The former Minister Ramalinga Reddy would participate at the inaugural function, he said.

He said that small-scale food processors, who found it hard to market their products such as pickles and dried food, would be provided with free stalls. Competitions would be organised in vegetable carving, Ikebana, bonsai, and flower arrangement.

With regard to different competitions, the organisers had received 659 entries this year as against 450 last year.

Mr. Kumar said the ticket for the show would be priced at Rs. 20 from January 19 to 25. On January 26, it would be Rs. 50. "Last year, we could not manage the crowd on the last day.

To make sure that it does not happen this year too, we have made provisions for extra security. We will have volunteers to help us with crowd control," he added.

On January 24, schoolchildren will be allowed to enter for free between 8 a.m. and noon.
