Punishments that made SJP Road stench-free

Punishments that made SJP Road stench-free

BANGALORE: It is a pleasure to use the Silver Jubilee Park (SJP) road these days, not just because it has been re-laid with a concrete surface. It is free of stench, something market areas have been historically known for.

It’s not Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) authorities who have made the area stench-free, but the Ulsoor Gate traffic police. They are handling the men creating nuisance in their own simple way.

They catch those urinating on the footpath and give them three options.

1 They can pay the fine and get away.

2 They can get a bucket of water and clean up the area. Or,

3 Hold their ears, and do sit-ups.

The idea has worked, and no one dares urinate in the area, says B K Goyal, Secretary of the Federation of Trade Associations of Central Bangalore. He has urged the City Police and the BMP to introduce this method all over the area.

The City Market and Kalasipalyam police too have been able to bring about some order, he says. BMTC commuters had the habit of getting down from the buses wherever they wished and crowding the place all over.

These days, police are forcing the commuters back into their buses, and have warned BMTC drivers that they will be booked if commuters get down at places other than designated bus-stops.

Driving in market areas too is no longer a hassle as it once used to be, Goyal adds.
