The government has crossed the first legal hurdle to the formation of Greater Bangalore Mahanagara Palike with the Karnataka High Court on Thursday dismissing a former mayor’s petition challenging the government’s draft notification to include more areas within the ambit of the new entity.

The government has crossed the first legal hurdle to the formation of Greater Bangalore Mahanagara Palike with the Karnataka High Court on Thursday dismissing a former mayor’s petition challenging the government’s draft notification to include more areas within the ambit of the new entity.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice Ram Mohan Reddy dismissed the PIL petition filed by P R Ramesh, observing that it was “premature” to interfere with the draft notification issued on November 2.

Mr Ramesh had claimed that the government had violated clauses of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act in not seeking the views of the BMP council on the formation of GBMP. However, the bench noted that the government had sent the draft to the BMP on November 3, seeking its views as per the law.
