It is finally open. The Butterfly Park at the Bannerghatta Biological Park that provides a peek into the world of the winged wonders will be inaugurated on November 25. Butterfly lovers can become one with these creatures, as there are no barriers to get close to them.

The first phase of this seven-acre park, which took two-and-a-half years to get ready, is home to 42 species of butterflies from Bangalore City. Dr K Chandrashekara, Department of Entomology, University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore said that the park was established through a grant from the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India and the State Government.

Chandrashekara said that the butterflies were reared at the park by a group of experts and scientists, and that the park would need 24x7 maintenance, which would be taken care of by ZAK. “This park serves the educational, research and conservational aspects, wherein students who are interested in studying butterflies may come and learn about the various species and their behavioural patterns,” he said.

As one enters the park, the pathway leads to the polycarbonated dome, wherein the reared butterflies are housed amongst thousands of plant species.

The dome has waterfalls and cobblestones along with flowering plants, creating an atmosphere of the rain forests. This 10,500 sq feet dome, also houses artificial feeders wherein the butterflies can feed on honey or sugar residues placed on artificial plants.
