Ground activity and action on the Metro Rail front made its presence felt adjacent to the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Cubbon Road in the City on Tuesday.

The Geo Technical Drill (GTD) got underway here, in the presence of top officials of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation led by its Managing Director V Madhu. The work on Metro rail was formally kick-started on Monday near the Spencer’s store on MG Road.

In a brief interaction, Mr Madhu said, “the idea is to start civil construction works by end December or early January.” The final round of selection of the General Management Consultants (GMC) for the Bangalore Metro Rail is also expected to be through by then. It means that the GMC can be on location when the construction work takes off, he explained.

The GTD taken up on Tuesday is part of the Geo Physical Survey (soil test-related work) the BMRC is taking up along the 33-km metro rail route between B R V Parade Grounds, M G Road to Byappanahalli.

The BMRC has termed this route as ‘Reach I’ of Bangalore Metro Rail and aims to complete its work in the next three years. The GPS will help identify the depth at which the piers have to be laid, Mr Madhu said.

It is said that GTD will be held in 19 stretches along the route. One bore hole will be dug at every 50 metres on the underground stretch and at every 100 metres on the elevated stretch, amounting to a total 280 bore holes on ‘Reach I’.
