BANGALORE: The `Suvarna Karnataka' Independence Day Horticultural Show 2006 will be organised by the Mysore Horticultural Society at the Glass House and Dr. M.H. Marigowda Memorial Hall, Lalbagh, from August 8 to 15. The flower show can be traced back to 1912. Since 1922, flower shows are being held here twice a year. Earlier, it was called the summer and winter shows. From 1951 they are being called the Independence Day and the Republic Day horticultural shows.
"The show this year is a blend of Suvarna Karnataka celebrations, marking 50 years of Statehood and Independence day. Over the past two decades we have been conducting horticultural shows and not merely flower shows," said Dr. G.K. Vasantkumar, President of Mysore Horticultural Society and Director of Horticulture Department. The theme of the show this year is biodiversity, he added.
He told presspersons that the entries for the garden competition had increased to 885 this year against last year's 650. The special shows at the Glass House this year will be Belgian flower arrangement, Indian floral art, Dutch art, Bonsai, dry flowers, Thai art and vegetable carvings.
The entrance fee for the show is Rs. 20. Children below 12 will be charged Rs. 10.
