BANGALORE: When the city is left with few parks and fewer trees, what makes ‘Garden City’ more colourful? It’s BMTC buses!
Surprised? Over 4,000 buses in different shades of red, blue, blue-white, pink, brown and grey have added colour to the service.
It was until 1997 that the blood-red buses ruled Bangalore Transport Service (BTS). The colour of the buses was changed to a combination of blue and white as BTS became the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC).
Later, BMTC introduced the semi-luxury ‘Pushpak’ buses and gave it a light brown hue. With the introduction of the Volvo service in January 2006, the corporation added a gorgeous red (which was different from the earlier BTS red), followed by complete blue buses as a part of ‘Grid’ service and three-door buses in ‘grey’. Last week, they added another colour - pink ‘Women’s Special’.
Soma shekar V K, co-chairperson of BMTC commuter advisory and facilitation committee, told this website’s newspaper that they have proposed three more coloured bus services. “We have not decided the colour yet,” he said. However, BMTC sources said they will include green buses.
