South Western Railway (SWR) will soon expand its premises at the second entry point (near platform no. 8) at the City Railway Station.

Addressing reporters after opening five new and renovated facilities at the Cantonment and City stations on Thursday, Mr T N Perti, General Manager – SWR said the expansion plans included construction of a new building.

“The BMP has been in touch with us, requesting us for parts of the Railway land at the second entry as part of a road-widening plan. The talks are on, but we are looking at utilising the space for our building, and also for setting up new ticket counters,” he said. Mr Perti said an A/C lounge that he inaugurated on Thursday would merge into the expanded area.

Earlier, the GM inaugurated renovated waiting halls and an A/C lounge at the Cantonment Station, an A/C lounge at platform no. 8, a renovated concourse/customer facilitation centre and an Internet cafe at the City Station. The projects are part of a Rs 3.6-crore initiative to enhance facilities in stations in the City.

The GM added that the Railways was on alert following the Mumbai serial blasts and the RPF was working in tandem with the State Police in conducting checks.

Hi-speed surfing

The internet cafe at the City Station – set up in association with VSNL and RailTel, a PSU under the Railway Ministry – has 16 computers on two floors, enabled with wi-fi connectivity. The cafe, at present, offers one-time use scratch cards of denominations of Rs 12 (30 minutes) and Rs 23 (one hour). Railtel also plans to launch pre-paid cards offering access to all RailTel cyber cafes in the country. Mr Mahesh Kumar, DRM – SWR said the new projects were covered under a five-year plan for 10 model stations, including the City and Cantonment stations, Yeshwanthpur, Krishnarajapuram and Tumkur.
