Traffic was hampered on Sirsi Circle flyover because of damage to one stretch of the expansion joints connecting the slabs on the via-duct on Wednesday afternoon. Traffic flow from Town Hall junction towards Mysore Road was affected as the BMP personnel got down to repair the stretch.

The traffic jam was cleared only after police intervened and directed the BMP workers to take up repair during the night.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) B Malgatti said, “The police persuaded the Palike workers to stop work on the flyover as it led to a traffic jam. Following the suggestion, the Palike workers stopped work at 3 pm. Police were able to clear the traffic jam only two hours later.”

Palike engineers noted that originally maintenance of the flyover was the responsibility of the builder-party, L&T in this case, and the contract period had since lapsed. Presently, the maintenance of the flyover is the division level responsibility in the BMP, the health section taking care of cleanliness and the ward level engineers taking care of the technical aspects.

The damaged portion is the grilled section on the otherwise rubber-based expansion joint.

The grilled section is meant to drain out the rain water, the engineers said.
