A joint house committee had been constituted to probe into government land encroached in and around Bangalore and also into allegations that irregularities running into crores of rupees had taken place during land deals in the region.

The 20-member panel headed by Legislator A T Ramaswamy has been constituted following an opinion in both houses of Legislature that a proper count on the land encroached in Bangalore City and surroundings should be done.

The committee constituted jointly by Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna and Legislative Council V R Sudarshan has been given three months time to submit its report.

The panel will probe the extent of government land that has been encroached in Bangalore North, South, West and Anekal taluks. It will also identify the survey number of the land encroached, the persons and associations behind land grabbing and the market value of the encroached land.

Besides, the committee will look into whether government officials or elected representative were involved in land grabbing and recommend what action should be initiated against them.

The panel has been asked to suggest how to recover the encroached land and the steps that need to be taken to curb the menace in the future.
