TOURISTS visiting the Lalbagh Garden are disappointed with the way the Japanese Garden, an integral part of Lalbagh, is being maintained.

The concept of Japanese Garden was mooted to attract a large number of people.

However , at present only sculptures, Japanese bridges and dried up fountains greet garden lovers.

W e come from a place that is far from here. W e were eager to see the botanical wonders and the much talked about Japanese Garden in Lalbagh. But all our dreams were shattered the moment we saw the pathetic plight of the garden. The board, which reads ’Japanese Garden’, increases one’s inquisitiveness. But we didn’t get any details and felt let down, said Shridhar , a visitor to the park.

"Some grey areas amidst the lush greenery in Lalbagh make us feel sorry ," he added.

It is true that the Japanese Garden has been ignored in terms of maintenance. In the next two years, the Japanese Garden will be developed, a Lalbagh official said.

T alking to BVT , Horticulture Director G K V asanth Kumar said the concept of Japanese Garden was mooted in 1960. It had been proposed to establish the garden on an area of 3.5 to 4 acres.

I agree that the Japanese Garden needs to be totally renovated and properly maintained. W e have taken up various programmes at the Lalbagh to improve its condition. Improving the Japanese Garden has also been included and work on the same will be executed this year itself, Kumar said.

Work like desilting, building Japanese style small bridges, fountains and adding a few pagodas to the existing ones would be done shortly , he added.
