Bangalore: Another bigticket infrastructure project has just been finalised to ease Bangalore’s traffic woes. In what’s seen as a gift to Bangaloreans, chief minister H D Kumaraswamy on Saturday gave the nod for the Monorail project, whose work will begin on August 15.

The Monorail has been pitched as a feeder service to the Metro project, which received the Union cabinet’s clearance recently.

“Monorail work will commence on August 15 and the project will be executed in 15 months. The first 18-km stretch will be taken up on a pilot basis,’’ Kumaraswamy, who completed 100 days in office, said at Meet-the-Press organised by the Bangalore Reporters’ Guild.

About the project’s features, Kumaraswamy said starting the work on Monorail ahead of Metro will not hamper the latter’s progress. “You will have both projects on time,’’ he added.

To be planned and executed by a Malaysian company, the Monorail will run 95 km from Majestic in Bangalore city to Kanakapura in Bangalore Rural district with various inter-linkages en route. According to the blueprint, the project will not hamper the the Metro Rail and the public property need not be demolished during
project execution. It will be taken up on the build-ownoperate-transfer basis.

By giving clearance to the Monorail project, Kumaraswamy has placated his father, JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda, who’s been a votary of the project.
