Garbage cleared from three markets in city

The BMP deployed 125 health department staff for the cleaning drive

BANGALORE: The officers and staff of the Health Department of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) on Sunday took up an intensive cleaning programme in three markets in the city, and transported the accumulated garbage from these markets.

On the directions of BMP Commissioner K. Jairaj, the Health Department initiated the cleaning programme in K.R. Market, Russel Market and Johnson Market. The BMP deployed 125 health department staff to remove the garbage.

As much as nine truckloads of garbage were removed from K.R. Market during the operations.

The cleaning programme was in response to citizens' complaints that garbage had accumulated in several places in the markets and was left unattended for some days.

The operations were supervised by Manu Baligar, Deputy Commissioner (Helath); Vijayalakshmi, Chief Health Officer; Devaki Umesh and Nagaraj, both Health Officers; and Basavendrappa, Ramesh and Venkatesh, all Medical Officers of Health, according to a BMP release.
