Bangalore: No more of tolerating those constructing buildings dumping stones, sand and other construction material on the pavements and roadsides, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has decided.

The operation of clearing debris dumped on public property took a new turn on Thursday: the debris dumped on the road and drains by the owner of a commercial complex was shifted by the BMP staff into the premises of the building. The owner was imposed a fine of Rs. 1 lakh for having obstructed public movement and damaging the road and drains.

The building involved is a complex facing the Forum Mall in Koramangala. BMP Commissioner K. Jairaj asked the engineers to take strict action following complaints from the public; he felt it amounted to vandalising public property. The staff of the engineering department, led by Joint Commissioner (East) N. Jayaram, swung into action. In eight cases, building owners in Koramangala division were on Thursday fined Rs. 58,000 for not clearing the material kept on the pavements outside their premises. Five building owners in Jayanagar division were fined Rs. 3,000 for obstructing the pavements and roadsides. Mr. Jairaj said the campaign against the dumping of construction material on pavements would continue.
