Agency to develop `tree parks' in layouts

BANGALORE: Nagarbhavi Layout may finally get good roads, a few parks and proper electricity supply. Almost two decades after the Bangalore Development Authority established the layout, it is going back there to improve the infrastructure.

On most roads the asphalt had worn away leaving exposed huge craters. The 40-foot main roads and smaller side roads had become narrower because building contractors had dumped huge piles of debris on either sides of the road. Electritification works were also not properly established.

The area that had been earmarked as parks by the BDA was in neglect. They were completely overgrown with weeds and thorny bushes. Often snakes are found in them. "These are not parks that we can sit down it or go for a walk around. They are just vacant plots of land that are in disregard," said Mangala Gowri, a resident.

Commissioner of the BDA M.K. Shankaralinge Gowda said improving amenities in all its layouts including Anjanapura, HSR Layout, Banashankari 6th stage and Visvesvaraya Layout was a priority. "We want to make these areas more liveable," he said.

Even though the BDA handed over Nagarbhavi Layout to the City Municipal Council (CMC) almost decade ago, it will now go back to the layout and improve the infrastructure and develop the parks. "Some of the works were not done when we handed over the layout to the CMC. We are now going to take care of those works," a BDA official said.

Asphalting work

The BDA is planning to take up asphalting in the area. They had already issued tenders for electrification works. "We have almost completed those works. Earlier, we had established only temporary connections to the transformer," the official said.

The residents of the layout are thrilled. Balakrishna Rao, vice-president of Nagarbhavi Resident's Association, said the stepping up of the BDA to provide amenities was a welcome sign. "We have been struggling with poor infrastructure for a long time now."

The CMC officials said the layout was handed to them incomplete. In addition, they did not have the finances to take up all the works in the area. The BDA was also envisaging setting up tree parks in the layouts. "Every where around the world this is the trend. We also need to get into it," said Mr. Gowda.
