BANGALORE: National Institute of Design opened its Research and Development campus for the first time outside Ahmedabad to meet the growing demand for more innovation and new ideas in the city on Friday.
United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) director general, Dr K. K Yumkella said after inauguration that research is playing a vital role to enable countries to keep pace with the growing competition due to globalisation.
He stressed that enhanced research capability would enable India to emerge into a global leader. There is a need to improve the quality of education not only to achieve overall development but also enable the country to face challenges, he added.
National Institute of Design (NID) chairman, Ajay K Dua, who is also secretary of the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, said 52 per cent of the country’s GDP was contributed by the services sector. There is a need for innovative e-designs as traditional designing would not help survival in the growing competitive world.
The R and D campus will be a platform for design research exploring user-centric aspects, cognitive ergonomics, visual culture, brands and graphics, materials and process, methodologies and approaches.
The campus is built at a cost of Rs 4.8 crore. About Rs 2.5 crore has been spent on interiors and equipment for labs.
The institute is supported by the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) and the Department of Communication and Information Technology.
This R and D campus will have four main units that includes research and development units for e-learning and digital inclusion, product innovations, and design business incubation, and design clinics for SME enterprises.
Another unit will look into nationally significant and sensitive design projects.
