Who says parking doesn't cost you?

A VE you been harassed by parking attendants who ask you to shell out a parking fee even when the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) has scrapped the ’Pay and Park’ system? W ell, this report will then be of interest to you.
At various places in the City , there are several people who demand money to let you park your vehicle. While most attendants do not demand any money , motorists pay anywhere between Rs 1.50 to Rs 2 of their own accord.
However , at a parking lot near the T riveni theatre on Annamma temple road at Majestic, motorists are compelled to pay a fixed amount for parking their vehicles.
This parking lot has a group of at least three attendants "guarding" the vehicles. Ironically , a traffic policeman stands just a few yards away .
The group demands that an amount be paid as parking fee.
"P eople ar e compelled to pay Rs 3 per hour while the pay and par k system has been scr apped. And that too , in advance ," said a motorist, who was visibly irritated.
The members of the group, however , justify their actions. A physically challenged person, one of the members of the group , said : "This is the only way can get some money . The police too are aware of this. In fact, they get a share the money collected daily ." However , not many people choose to rebel or even raise questions. They end up paying and indirectly encourage such activities.
"W e know that it is illegal but they do not let us go without paying them. I am sure that they have the support of the police," a motorist at the parking lot said.
Speaking to B BV VT T , Basavraj Malagatthi, DCP ( W est), said : "I will look into the matter and inquire if this is happening. If the allegation is found to be true, then appropriate action will be taken." Next time you are harassed, remember that this is illegal and due action can be taken against the people who demand money .

Let us be realistic here. Even though we know that the pay and park system is scrapped, paying 2-3 Rs. for parking is better than having your vehicle damaged and scratched by the 'parking attendant(s)', and better than spending 10 minutes arguing with them and spoiling your peace of mind.
Are the traffic police in cahoots with them? Well, if you really need to ask that question, you have not been in Bangalore for long my friend, or you do not drive on Bangalore roads yourself!
