We’re trying to be friendly: Police chief

BANGALORE: City Police Commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh, who is due for promotion as DGP, said on Tuesday that the city police were trying to be more people friendly.

Speaking to reporters about his seven-month tenure as police commissioner, Singh said that one of the common problems faced by the public was that they were made to wait for senior officers.

Usually, a person with a grievance is asked to wait till the inspector or sub-inspector arrives, and sometimes they are directed to another police station.

‘‘We wanted to change that. I don’t think I have changed much, but even if we have, I am not satisfied,’’ Singh said. About crime and law and order, he said that the city police had done good work.

‘‘The city police record for recoveries has been good. Over the last few months we have been in a position to arrest several rowdies. The morale of the police force is quite high,’’ he said.

New Commissioner?

With Singh due for promotion, several police officers of the rank of Additional DGP are now in the race for the post of Police Commissioner.

The senior-most ADGP is a woman officer, Jija S.Harisingh, who is presently MD of Mysore Minerals Ltd.

Others in the list are Subash Bharani (ADGP Law & Order), S C Saxena (ADGP DCRE), Dr D V Guruprasad (ADGP Intelligence) S T Ramesh (ADGP Recruitment & Training) Achutha Rao N (ADGP TTM), M K Srivastava (Crime & TechnicalServices), A.R. Infant (ADGP KSRP) Lalrokhuma Pachau (Lokayukta) Kuchanna Srinivasan (ADGP Police Computer Wing) Shankar Mahadev Bidari (ADGP Administration) and Dharmapal Negi (ADGP Prisons).

The Commissioner also said that a new campaign for creating traffic awareness among citizens would be implemented in two months’ time.

The tenders for the campaign have been accepted and the police would shortly send a report to a high power committee, Singh said.

‘‘The project will be a multifaceted approach,’’ Additional Commissioner (Traffic), M N Reddi told this website’s newspaper.

The police would meet school children, hold debates in educational institutions and carry out an advertisement campaign through various media. Aimed at promoting safe driving and awareness about traffic rules, the campaign would be conducted for a year.

992 traffic cops

City Police Commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh on Tuesday announced that the government had sanctioned 992 traffic policemen for the city, a demand which the police have long been pressing for.

‘‘The government has sanctioned 6 Inspectors, 82 Sub-Inspectors, 214 ASIs, 390 head constables and 300 constables. This should held in easing the traffic situation,’’ Singh said.
