The residents of HSR Layout may feel there is no development of work-in-progress by the Bangalore Development Authority in their localities, but the BDA asserts that they have undertaken 47 works at a cost of Rs 35.94 crore to repair the damage done during the October rains.
“Even if we receive twice the rainfall in the coming monsoon, there will not be a drop of rainwater on the streets of HSR Layout,” claims BDA Commissioner M N Vidyashankar.
This ‘potential’ achievement, he credits to the “interventions” that have been designed to meet the BDA layout’s drainage problems. The BDA is now planning to redesign the entire drainage system of the area.
“We are going to break the existing side drains and create new ones double its size. Also, we are planning to construct huge box drains and canals that will curl across the ring road to lead to Agaram Lake. We will also clear the channels leading to Belandur and Agaram lakes,” Mr Vidyashankar said.
Apart from drainage, the BDA will also give priority to improvements and asphalting of roads, providing street lights, development of parks and other infrastructure amenities, he added. The road works tenders were awarded a fortnight ago. Works, that will begin during the second week of February, are expected to complete by April-end. The BDA will also demolish encroachments on valleys of Begur, Madiwala, Agara and Belandur lakes to avoid future floodings.
