A monthly Solid Waste Management cess will be applicable in the City beginning January 1. The cess will be applicable to both residential and non-residential buildings.
To begin with, citizens may remit the cess at the office of their respective Zonal Health Officer or opt for BMP’s Revenue Inspectors to collect it from their doorsteps. Over a period of time, the BMP is likely to delegate the cess collection task to its garbage collection contractors, a press release said.
Varying slabs have been fixed for residential units, commercial establishments, industries, hospitals, hotels, kalyan mantaps and others. (For details, refer box). A waiver of 5 per cent may be earned by making the payments for all the 12 months at one go, before the first 30 days of a given financial year (April 1 to 30).
The SWM cess is to be implemented by all the City Corporations in the State under an amendment brought into section 103(B)2 of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act.
The final notification was issued by the government in February 2004. The BMP council gave its final approval to the same on October 26 this year.
