The BJP on Monday demanded the dissolution of the sitting council of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike alleging large scale irregularities in its functioning. Chief Minister Dharam Singh, who also holds the Bangalore Development portfolio, must take responsibility for the state of affairs, it said.

Exchange of commissions and vested dealings between officials and contractors rule the roost in the sanction and allotment of works at the BMP, the BJP alleged. As a case in justification, it wondered why Bangalore’s roads should present such a sorry picture, when Rs 600 crore has been spent on road laying works over the last five years.

The BJP demanded that the BMP take immediate action against the poor quality of road works as pointed out by an experts’ committee’s report to the High Court, recently. BJP leaders led by its city MLAs - Uttarahalli legislator R Ashok, Shivajinagar legislator Katta Subramanya Naidu and others staged a dharna near the chief minister’s home office to draw attention to these issues.

The party has threatened to launch an agitation across the Bangalore Urban District if the chief minister fails to act.
