BANGALORE: After much dilly-dallying, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has finally decided to introduce Volvo buses in the City. An exclusive depot will be set up for the luxury buses.

In the first phase, the BMTC will acquire 25 Volvos and another 25 in the second phase.

”It is essential to have an exclusive hi-tech depot for these buses, as well as trained mechanics,” Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation Managing Director Upendra Tripaty told this paper. Chief Civil Engineer Dileep said BMTC had identified a two-acre land next to BMTC bus terminus in Shantinagar for the depot cum commercial complex.

The project, which would cost Rs 30 crore, will have seven floors including the bus depot on the ground floor, food court, commercial complex, two and four-wheeler parking and other basic passenger amenities.

”BMTC has signed an agreement with the Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDEC), which has submitted a design plan for the project. The construction will start in the next two months,” he added.

While the depot can accommodate 50 Volvo buses, the BMTC can also earn some revenue from the portion rented out. Once the work starts, the Corporation plans to call a tender for the commercial complex, food court and vehicle park.
