BANGALORE: Commuters in the city may soon be able to breathe a sigh of relief.

The Bangalore Development Authority has issued work orders for two major projects — the four laning of the Airport Road from HAL to Kundalahalli Cross and the Mysore Road-Magadi Road stretch of the Outer Ring Road.

Work on both projects is expected to start at the end of the month, said BDA Commissioner M.N. Vidyashankar. "Construction of the two sections of the roads will help ease the congestion in the city by to a large extent," he said.

As a five-kilometre stretch between Mysore Road and Magadi Road is incomplete, vehicles have to take a detour of almost 18 kilometres. Users of this road have to travel from Magadi Road via Kengeri and join the Mysore Road at the Outer Ring Road at the junction at Nayandahalli. The BDA is planning to build three underpasses and two flyovers on the Outer Ring Road. The work is expected to be completed in January 2007.

Road widening work on the stretch of Airport Road from HAL to Kundalahalli cross is expected to be completed by the end of 2006.

The BDA will also issue tenders for constructing the central line of the proposed 12-lane peripheral Ring Road.

The road will eventually link all the highways leading out of the city such as Hosur Road, Old Madras Road, Mysore Road, Kanakapura Road, Tumkur Road, Bellary Road, Magadi Road, Sarjapur Road, and Bannerghatta Road.
