RPF assaults IT firm employee

An employee of an IT company in Bangalore was allegedly beaten up by some Railway Protection Force (RPF) officers with the help of two travelling ticket examiners (TTs) at the City Railway Station on September 30.

Nimish V Adani (25), an IIM, Lucknow, graduate who works as business development manager at Logix Microsystems here, said he was roughed up while on his way out of the station after seeing off his fiancée and her mother by the Karnataka Express to Jhansi at 6.30 pm.

“A TT asked for my platform ticket. I received a call on my mobile. The TT got impatient and kept asking for the ticket. On producing the ticket, he first said it was not mine and then asked me what I would do if he said I hadn’t produced the ticket,” alleged Adani. Before he could react, the TT along with a colleague pushed him into an enquiry cabin, assaulted him and broke his spectacles and handset. Later, five RPF men – “a senior” and four constables – whisked away the public, dragged Adani to the station master’s cabin, all the while hitting him with lathis.

The staff spoke Hindi, he said. Adani was told that he had been charged with a non-bailable offence and would be behind bars for 15 days. They later asked him to sign a statement saying he was drunk and had hit the police and the TT. On his refusal, he was forced to write that he did not produce the platform ticket when asked.

Meanwhile, a youth, claiming to be Vipin Srinivas, an IT company employee, posing as a good samaritan tried to fleece Adani of nearly Rs 15,000. He had convinced a battered Adani to part with his ATM card and also the PIN by assuring him that the money would be needed to bribe the RPF officials.

Adani had also seen him interact with the RPF men. However, he realised that he was being duped when Srinivas tried to buy a mobile handset worth about Rs 18, 000 with his credit card. Adani escaped snatching his card and cash. Adani, who sustained injuries on his arms, back and thighs, suspects that the fraudster and the RPF men were hand-in-glove.

On Sunday, Adani met an official at the City control room, who guided him to the DIG, Railways. The official on condition of anonymity has also confirmed this. The DIG’s personal assistant received the complaint on Tuesday, Adani said.
