Is it time to wind up from Bangalore?

Chaos: Is it time to wind up from Bangalore?
The Times of India

NEW DELHI: Padma works as an international ticketing supervisor in one of Bangalore's top travel and tour operators and she rides a scooty to her office. For the past one week, it has been impossible to commute to her office, leave alone riding through the streets of Bangalore.

Rajeev rides a Bullet and he works in foreign language section of one the top multinational organizations. He is looking for the waters to recede.

So is every Bangalorean. Last Sunday night, it was impossible to reach the Bangalore airport as the rain pounded the city and the waters were rising.
And the infrastructure collapsed completely, leaving vital links to the city disrupted. And angry city residents could do nothing but be patient and wait for situation to normalise.

Richmond Circle was a scene straight from hell. Most roads and city's all arteries are clogged.
The rains left many I-T firms inundated. Wipro office was inundated too. Office goers had a tough time.

While the rains have stopped in Bangalore, it is raining trucks and tractors in Mysore and on the Mysore-Bangalore stretch. The four-highway lane between Mysore and Bangalore which began four years ago is still not completed. As a result the traffic is diverted from Pandavnagar.

Farmers in Mandya, Pandavnagar and Ramnagar are already scared that their paddy fields would submerge during the downpour. The train services between the two cities have been cancelled and also trains leaving south from Bangalore. This has exposed the infrastructural flaw in the city and also in the state.

The rains have wreaked havoc in the IT city at a time when there was a face-off between the Infosys mentor Narayanamurthy and the former Prime Minister H.D Deve Gowda about how the former has been indulging in land-grabbing and has not been concentrating on the Bangalore International Airport.

It began when the Wipro chief Azim Premji first raised an alarm about the deteriorating infrastructure in the city, lack of infrastructure facilities and lack of accommodation facilities. Recently, Bangalore was again in news for its astronomical hotel prices almost as high as London and Paris.

Immediately after Bangalore was named the IT city, or let us say, most IT companies migrated to the Garden city, the real estate prices shot up. Bangalore also became a sanctuary for retired civil servants and any one who had money. In the recent years, Bangalore has not been able to grow beyond its IT billboard. Companies like Infosys have not only been blamed by Deve Gowda but by most people who are Kannadigas who live in Bangalore.

We invite you to post your comments on what you feel on the issue. Join us and speak up. Is it time to wind up from India's IT city?

Every thing happens for good.

There was a hype created about bangalore which brought every body in. If they log off let them becos of its repurcussions [it is a chain reaction].

5000 - influx daily to b'lore.
Tell me is it humanly possible to handle them ??

It is good for us concerning the number of immigrants that have appeared from out of karnataka.

& also about the cost of living in bangalore which has hit a big time.

It is a silent protest from kannadigas as it has always happened. Like the way we got english back to MTV or FM 91 or channel V.
May be the politiks works that way too and may be NATURE too -:)

to ps: kannada is not used in the capital city cos of it's cosmopolitian nature. It was the case since 25 years but now it's changing...i was scared to come to b'lore as i did not know english properly & not many people conversed in kannada

Kannada is no longer being used much in the capital city.
These IT firms…they deprive the Bangalore students of jobs.
What the heck is going on here, no doubt, Bangalore has hit a Huge road block.

How can bangalore ever progress, with such close minded people.
To set record straight, i was born right here in bangalore. But i dont think in terms of just kannada and kannadiga. This world is for the winners who fight come what may, to achieve what they want. Not for loosers, who keep whining and cribbing.
No way, you must be out of your mind.
That puts you in level with politicians, who fail to see the Light.

banaglore was sulf sufficeinet for people here just about a decade ago, those glory days of empty streets.

The Total Influx into bangalore has to be controled, I know, we are not yet there( like in US and europe), But something needs to be done.
Government has to study this on a whole.

We have more coolie workers in bangalore than BPO workers, Same with the Demand.

Coming bcak to infrastructure, Govt should be sleeping, IT is the Sigle greatest thing that happened to Bangalore.
Why kill the Golden Goose, it has brought with it, opportunities and a new way of thinking and living.

Govt has to provide infrastructure to IT and Public in whole.
After all IT is the biggest tax payer in bangalore, why not utilise it build bangalore complete (Not half flyovers here and there).
and then when the goose is laying eggs, why not utilise it to build other cities.
Bangalore was a role model, for many cities, its still is.
With Closed mind politician and Citizens, we are strangling it to death, live alone, it dying on its own.

Well PS, you could have mentioned it, Some one could easily mistook that for your views.
None the Less, Apologies.
And i am glad to see you on the same boat.

Whats happening to china, is unbeliveable, People have realised what big part can taxes and corporates make to economy of china.
They are just creating an environment so inviting for nay one.
Just like laying a nest for the Goose and providing it with everything it needs.
At the end of the day, both are happy.
Its a win win situation.

Well about Gowda
He has acted like an uneducated beggar.
When he says where are the funds for the Metro (ironically the funds were there), he doesnt realise that metro is just not another project that goes the drain.
people are going to use it, as time progress, can definetely make profits in the future.
Its not that, every one stops coming to bangalore, and no one will use metro.

you are absolutely right, bangalore can take in no more.

And to the question, is it time to wind up from bangalore.
The question itslef is innocent.

MNC's have not invested millions, just to wind up one fine day.

But Bangalore will stabilise, and all other cities, will gets its share of the pie.
The present MNC's will still operate here, but new ones, will definetely will look for alternatives.
And what was bangalore doing then, Napping! It is now.
Bangalore will loose out.

Allready it has lost to chennai

But Hold on, Bangalore is still the icing on the cake, the best part being its weather, who can beat it to that.

Whoever wants to leave Bangalore can do so. After all it is a free country. I have been to places like Chennai and Kolkota which is worse than Bangalore.
Try talking to someone in Chennai other than tamil. You will get your answer.

There is a reason people have flocked to Bangalore. Weather, intelectual and educated folks around you and the capacity to accept others from different states. This is what makes this place such a great place to live. Infrastucture is a long term issue and will have to be resolved.
