The road is now being widened so that it has four lanes.

The Government has identified the land required for widening the road into a six-lane highway.

The upgrading project will begin soon after the four-lane highway is ready.

Mr. Revanna said the 49-km-long stretch of highway between Mysore and Maddur will be opened by September 30. The 62.6-km stretch of the highway between Maddur and Bangalore will be completed by December. Although a major part of the Maddur-Bangalore stretch is complete, work on seven major bridges is still going on.

The Government proposes to begin acquisition of land for making it a six-lane highway in about two months. "Adequate compensation will be given to the land owners," he said. The Government will begin the project by widening the stretch between Jnanabharathi, on the outskirts of Bangalore, and Bidadi. Work on widening the stretch between Mysore and Srirangapatna will also be taken up in the initial stage, he said.

The first two lanes near the median on either side of the highway will be for fast vehicles, he said.

Mr. Revanna said the Government will introduce patrolling on the highway as soon as the four-lane highway is opened for traffic.

A meeting of the police commissioners of Mysore and Bangalore, besides the Superintendent of Mandya district police will be held to discuss the matter. A night patrolling squad for the highway will be formed, he added. Mr. Revanna said there were dangerous curves on the Bangalore-Mysore highway, and officials of the Public Works Department have been asked to invite tenders to improve the stretches.
